Biotechnology and Cancer Research in Cuba

7 April 2025

Biotechnology is one of today’s modern scientific fields that combines microbiology, chemical engineering, and biochemistry. It is used to study the biological interactions of living cells, particularly single-celled organisms.

By the late 1970s, cancer incidence in Cuba began to rise, exceeding 100 cases per 100,000 people. Realizing that cancer would become a major public health concern in the coming years, the Cuban government took proactive steps. Scientists were sent to Helsinki to study at the Finnish Serum Institute, where cancer research was being conducted and interferon—a substance with potential as an anti-tumor agent—was being developed. During this period, many Cuban researchers were also sent abroad to pursue doctoral studies at institutions such as the Curie Institute and Pasteur Institute in Paris, Heidelberg University in Germany, and Harvard University in the United States.

After completing their studies, these scientists returned to Cuba, ready to apply the knowledge and technologies they had acquired abroad. With a focus on cancer treatment, they launched intensive research and development efforts. As a result of these efforts, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) was established in 1986.

Today, biotechnology products have become Cuba’s second most important export category. Notable innovations include Policosanol, a cholesterol-lowering drug; Interferon, used to treat viral infections; the Meningococcal B vaccine; various generic drugs for AIDS treatment; Heberprot-B, used for diabetic foot ulcers; and globally recognized cancer treatments like CIMAvax-EGF for lung cancer and Nimotuzumab for head and neck cancers (Diaz, 2015).

Cuba’s achievements in biotechnology have also boosted its medical tourism industry. Patients from many countries continue to travel to Cuba seeking treatment for cancer and genetic diseases. As the country’s reputation grows for offering hope in treating a range of illnesses, its work in cancer therapy stands out in particular. Cuba’s determination and commitment to scientific progress have earned praise from researchers and medical professionals around the world.
